Winter Camp has been held at the Outdoor Education Center (also known as Clear Lake Camp & Conference Center) at Dowling, Michigan for 40 years. It began as a dream of Janette Maris, a blind teacher of the blind children at the Ann J. Kellogg School in Battle Creek and for 36 years it was supervised by Janette's nephew, Lion Paul Helm of the Cereal City Lions Club. The first two years were one day events, but for the next 38 years has been a full weekend of winter activities. Winter Camp was originally a Region project manned by Region Lions members, but recently became a District Project. Lions members from around the District now assist campers at this annual event.
Because of the dedication of the Lions of District 11-B1, blind campers from around the state now have an opportunity to participate in cross country skiing, snowmobiling (weather permitting), hay rides and other outdoor activities. Indoor activities consist of bingo, cribbage, crafts, reunion of friends and other activities. Entertainment is provided on Friday night, however, our campers produce an outstanding talent show on Saturday evening. Campers arrange their own devotional services on Sunday. Great meals are a highlight of the weekend.
Many campers return year after year to meet old friends and enjoy an opportunity to spend a weekend in the country setting.
The event is usually held at the same Outdoor Education Center the first full weekend of February. This year's event will be held on February 13th, 14th and 15th. The cost to the camper is $40.00. There are two dormitories and an activity center nestled in a wooded area near a lake. As you might expect, there are upper and lower bunks for the campers in the dormitories which creates a challenge for some of the vision impaired. Between 80 and 100 campers come to spend the weekend. The camp is used throughout the rest of the year for camping experiences of local school classes and is administered by the Battle Creek Public Schools System.
Lions clubs of the District are encouraged to promote the event, assist local blind persons in transportation needs and send members to the camp to help and enjoy the weekend with the campers. Lions assist campers with transportation from Battle Creek Bus and Train terminals, mobility around the facility, meals and activities.
